409 / 425 horsepower Chevrolet
Engine job,
for Jim, from Oregon
Completed December, 2002
On the left is the 1963 "QB" 425HP engine block that was used. It was de-burred, bored .060" and fit with the Ross forged 11.5:1 pistons shown below ( 421 CID ). Centre is the Crane roller camshaft and the "690" large port heads with roller rockers.
AHAH !.. here's what happens when a builder mixes up the pistons in a 409 "big horse" engine ! You can see in this photo that the intake valve had come in contact with the piston... opposite where the valve relief is. No harm done. Just take a bit of emery cloth and smooth any burrs. Centre and right picture show comparison to factory TRW 11:1 forged piston.
Jim's roller cammed 409 shown here before test running it. Note the roller rockers and Competition Cams 10 degree valve spring retainers and locks.
Photo on left shows the Crane roller lifters with their distinctive locking bars. On right is a good photo which highlights the unique bright red colour ! Pictures were taken in our new ( VERY old ! ) show room.
Thank you, Jim, for coming up and visiting in December, 2002 !
Aubrey
